At the end of winter, on a night when the chill still lingered, I took a river cruise on a yakatabune with a group of friends along the Sumida River.
The boat stopped briefly so the passengers could view fireworks being launched in the distance, and most of them gathered on that side.
But I found myself drawn to the opposite view—quiet city lights stretching out beyond the river—and began sketching in that direction.
From the stillness of the boat, the Tokyo skyline looked different than usual, the glow of the streetlights shimmering on the water’s surface.
Just then, a breeze brushed past me, carrying with it the faint warmth of spring, and somewhere deep inside, I felt that winter was beginning to slip away.
“Not interested in the fireworks?” the boatman asked, and I hesitated to answer.
But in truth, it was that quiet light and peaceful scenery that lingered most in my memory.
This piece was created from that fleeting moment.
